How to register for VAT in Norway?
Registering for VAT in Norway is a two-step process.
Firstly, you need to apply for a Norwegian organisation number.
An organisation number, often shortened to “orgnr”, is a nine-digit registration number assigned to businesses in Norway when they are registered in the Central Coordinating Register for Legal Entities (Enhetsregisteret), which is part of the Brønnøysund Register Centre. This number serves as a unique identifier for your business, alongside the businesses name.
Please note that this is not the same as establishing a new legal entity. It is just a step into getting the VAT number in Norway.
When you have your organisation number, you can start to register for VAT in Norway. The VAT registration takes place via the Norwegian Tax Administration.
Before you begin your registration:
- Determine if your enterprise needs to be registered. Some goods and services are not subject to VAT. When deciding whether an enterprise or organization must register, only the VAT-applicable part of the turnover is considered.
- You must register your enterprise once you have sold goods and services subject to VAT and the revenue from these sales exceeds the monetary threshold within a 12-month period. This period could span from, for example, February of one year to January of the next year, or from August of one year to July of the next year.
- During the registration process, you will be asked a series of questions. Your responses will help determine the appropriate registration type for your enterprise. While most enterprises fall under ordinary registration, there are other options available.
Often, the application is a pretty quick process. Sometimes additional information is required, and in these cases, it may take up to 3 weeks to receive a reply.
