How can a foreign company obtain a BTW number in the Netherlands?
Honestly? It's complicated if you try alone. The Belastingdienst and the Dutch Ministry of Finance require specific official documents, often in Dutch, and portal access requires DigiD (reserved for residents).

What exactly is DigiD and why do I need it?
DigiD (Digital Identity) is the official Dutch authentication system. A kind of electronic passport that proves you are who you claim to be before the Belastingdienst and the Ministry.
In the Netherlands, it's impossible to file VAT (BTW) without DigiD. Impossible to access the Ministry's or Belastingdienst's services, manage tax reports, or do anything official online regarding tax or payments.
The problem for you: you need to be an official Dutch resident to obtain it. A local importer or an individual established in the Netherlands can have one, but not a foreign entity.

What are the deadlines for VAT returns in the Netherlands?
Dutch VAT returns (BTW) are generally quarterly. The deadline: the last working day of the second month following the quarter for payments to the Belastingdienst.
Practical example:
- January–March quarter → deadline 31 May (payments and reports to the Dutch treasury)
- April–June quarter → deadline 31 August (tax and BTW to the tax authorities)
- And so on...
